Skip the line and visit one of the most popular museums and art galleries in all of Europe is the Uffizi Gallery (1560-1580). While the structure was originally built to be used as an Ufficio (office) for judges and magistrates in its early years as well as offices for the merchants and technicians of Florence, it soon found itself being used for something else.
The building’s top floor was the first to become a haven for magnificent art, having been turned into a private gallery solely for the enjoyment of the Medici, the ruling family of Florence, and their guests. This gallery held renaissance paintings, statues, majestic jewelry, ancient scientific instruments, and old weapons. This made the Uffizi Gallery one of the most interesting places for privileged locals and visitors, carrying one of the most precious art and artifact collections in the whole world.
Later, in 1865, the Uffizi finally became a museum that everyone can enjoy. It currently features 50 different rooms that house various collections of paintings that range from the 13th century to the 18th century, and with pieces from famous names as well as different art styles. The most popular pieces in the museum are the “Battle of San Romano” by Paolo Uccello, “Madonna Enthroned” by Giotto, “Federico da Montefeltro” by Piero della Francesca, and the magnificent and world-renowned “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli.
Also found in the Uffizi and considered must-sees when touring the many rooms are the works by the masters, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raffaello. Another notable artist that should not be missed here is Tiziano. All of the paintings in the museum are displayed chronologically. This is to enable visitors to see and appreciate the innovations and succession in art throughout the centuries.
